There are several alternatives available. We highly recommend understanding and evaluating all options as it causes direct implications for the safety environment at work. Some options are as under: 1.Dock Plates: Dock plates are flat, portable ramps to bridge between the loading dock and the back of a vehicle. Usually made of aluminum, they can be manually moved when needed. However, the design is not sturdy and cannot take heavy loads. Also it lacks safety barriers, the yellow strip alone cannot prevent runoffs. Dock plates are ideal for smaller vehicles and lighter loads. 2.Dock Boards: Dock Boards are similar to dock plates, but they are usually larger and heavy-duty in nature. They are ideal for heavy loads and larger carriers. They are used to bridge the gap between the trailer and the loading dock. 3.Dock Lift: Similar to a scissor lift, a dock lift has a platform that can be lifted or lowered using a hydraulic system. The dock lift is to be placed between the dock area and the trailer. 4.Truck restraints: This equipment secures a trailer to a loading dock while goods are being loaded/unloaded. They can help prevent accidents caused by trailers shifting or moving while goods are being transferred. It can also be used in conjunction with a dock ramp. Ultimately the choice of equipment depends upon the nature of the site, the cargo, and the type of vehicle used to load/unload the cargo. It is necessary to understand the features of each product and determine which equipment will be suitable for one’s requirements. Proper installation and maintenance of such equipment will ensure safe operations.
